Memorial Day quickly approaches, and we take this time to remember those who served and those who still serve in faraway places around the world. We wish peace to all who have been directly affected in the course of duty to our country. We honor your sacrifices and thank you preserving our way of life

On another note, I received a notice on my door this morning that the world will end on Saturday, May 21 at 6PM. If it doesn't and your plans need to change, why not come in for dinner, fabulous wines and some great entertainment. ( How about that segway! See our Friday and Saturday schedule below )

Our specials menu through the next several months will feature foods of various regions of Italy. Whether from the Veneto, Puglia, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Bari, etc we will have foods of those regions highlighted as specials for your enjoyment.

Happenings at Casa Dante         Theme menu for the week is "Foods of Sicily". Since we're from that region we figured we'd start our Theme Specials with our home area and work our way around the boot. If you have any suggested foods or recipes please let us know atinfo@casadante.com   Casa Dante will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday May 30. We are open all weekend with specials and entertainment.   Father's Day is Sunday June 19th and we will be honoring Dad with a special "Dad's" Menu and a few other surprises.   I will soon announce a special Summer Wine Event. Light full bodied or dry white summer choices for the tasting. Keep this in mind as I may include light courses of passed Italian delicacies and desserts. To be announced!   Spring is celebration time. Remember that we have special menu's  for parties, graduations, communions, baptisms, weddings and rehearsal dinner. Check with our staff for dates and times you need. !   .

Memorial Day Trivia:

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those who have died serving our country.

General John Alexander Logan ordered the Memorial Day holiday to be observed by decorating the war dead.

On Memorial Day, the flag should be at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff.

Red Poppies are recognized as the Memorial Day flower.

"Taps" is often played at ceremonies on Memorial Day.

Memorial Day was first called "Decoration Day" because of the practice of decorating soldier’s graves with flowers.

New York was the 1st state to officially recognize Memorial Day.

Flowers and flags are the two most popular items people use to remember soldiers.

The south refused to honor the dead on Memorial Day until after World War I when the meaning of Memorial Day changed from honoring civil war dead to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday in 1971.

 

 

Healthy Italian

 

• Grilled Chicken Burgers

a Great alternative to Memorial Day barbecue Beef Burgers. Try this recipe instead. You will be delighted!
Ingredients

1 onion, chopped

2 teaspoons minced garlic

1 red bell pepper, chopped

1 cup fresh sliced mushrooms

1 tomato, seeded and chopped

2 carrots, chopped

2 pounds ground chicken

1 egg

1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs

1 tablespoon Old Bay ™ Seasoning

kosher salt to taste

black pepper to taste

Directions

Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat and lightly oil grate.

Lightly spray a saute pan with cooking or oil spray over medium heat. Saute the onion with the garlic first, then the bell pepper, then the mushrooms, tomatoes and carrots, all to desired tenderness. Set aside and allow all vegetables to cool completely.

In a large bowl, combine the chicken and vegetables. Add the egg, bread crumbs and seasonings to taste. Mix all together well and form into 8 patties.

Grill over medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes per side, or to desired doneness.

B H Fussell, of the NY Times described the then newly relocated Casa Dante  "....like a boisterous Italian embrace....in a Fellini movie".    I agree with the comparison.
