- How about this..Thanksgiving is one month away!
Although Thanksgiving is tradionally celebrated at home, we know that in today's busy lifestyle, this is often unrealistic and expensive. Combined with the time needed for shopping, preparing, cooking, serving & cleanup, the holiday's could become more of a chore than a celebration. Casa Dante offers an alternative; We are open forThanksgiving Day celebration on Thursday November 24th. Featuring either a Special Menu with most of our Classics or a Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner. We don't do "seating's"( ie: 1pm, 3pm, etc ) so you choose the time by making reservations ( first come, first served so act soon). Let us do the work, the service, and the cleanup; you enjoy time with you family in a great restaurant! see www.casadante.com/events - Paul Sorvino Sings!, actor, singer, chef and friend of Casa Dante "sings" at the Loews Theater in Journal Square on Friday, November 4th. Anyone with tickets to the show gets a 10% discount off dinner check. Make sure you tell your server and see you at the concert! see his show information at www.paulsorvinosings.com

Great Recipe
Roasted Chestnuts
|
Not exactly a recipe but a "must have" in our home for the upcoming holiday season. I love to grab a bag from a vendor near Rockeffer Center. Not difficult to make at home and the great aroma denotes "holiday time" in our household. Purchase some nice, fresh chestnuts from your grocer ( I get mine at Whole Foods). One of the easiest and tastiest options is to roast them. Some country households had terracotta colanders they'd fill with chestnuts and settle into the coals, while others used lidded iron pans with holes cut into them, mounted on long handles (a popcorn popper lined with tinfoil that has holes punched through it would be a good substitute). If you lack a fireplace and cannot find a chestnut roasting pan (they're sold by a number of mail order outfits) I suggest you purchase a cheap, thin steel skillet (non-stick surfaces are not necessary here) and punch about a dozen holes into the bottom with a thick nail. Before roasting your chestnuts make a cut into the round side of each to keep it from exploding. Put the chestnuts into the roaster, sprinkle them lightly with water, and cook them over brisk heat for 10-20 minutes (depending upon their size), shaking them frequently to keep them from burning. When they're done the skins will have pulled back from the nuts, and the nutmeats will be firm but fork-tender - charred spots indicate insufficient shaking. Sprinkle them with a few drops of red wine (if you want), wrap them in an old cloth, squeeze them until they crackle, and let them sit in a warm place for five minutes. Peel back the cloth and enjoy! Few things are more pleasant that sitting around a fire with friends while eating roasted chestnuts and sipping a light wine such as Vino Novello or Beaujolais Nouveau (its French equivalent).
Don't have a roasting pan and don't want to sacrifice a regular pan, or don't have a gas stove? You can also roast chestnuts in the oven: Preheat your oven to 425 F (210 C), and make cuts in the round sides of the nuts. Arrange the chestnuts either on an oven rack or on a cookie sheet and roast them until the skins have pulled back from the cuts and the nutmeats have softened (exactly how long will depend upon the chestnuts, but at least 20-25 minutes. Wrap them as above and let them sit in a warm place briefly, and then enjoy them.

quote of the week
"Halloween was confusing. All my life my parents said, "Never take candy from strangers." And then they dressed me up and said, "Go beg for it." I didn’t know what to do! I’d knock on people’s doors and go, "Trick or treat." "No thank you."

Did you know? Halloween
Did you know that the origins of Halloween are rooted in an ancient festival honoring the dead, known as Samhain (pronounced "Sow-ween")? ??The Celtic people, who lived 2,000 years ago in the United Kingdom and northern France, believed that during Samhain, the veil between this world and the spirit world was at its thinnest. Samhain was a two festival, starting on November 1st.
Did you know that Halloween is also linked to the Catholic Church's celebration of All Saints Day? ??When the Church began sending out missionaries to the Celtic region, it adopted many traditional rituals and sanctioned them as Catholic activities. In the 7th century, for example, the Church's celebration of All Saints Day was moved to coincide with Samhain. A special mass called Allhallowmas was recited during All Saints Day, to honor any saints who did not already have a day of their own. The night before -- October 31st -- quickly became to be known as All Hallows Eve.
Did you know that the origins of " Trick o Treating" can be traced back to early celebrations of All Souls' Day in Britain? ??The poor would go from door-to-door, begging for so-called "soul cakes". Over time, the custom changed and children became the beggars, receiving apples, sweet buns and money. The tradition migrated over the Atlantic Ocean and quickly became entrenched in American celebrations of Halloween.
Did you know that more than 36 million children are expected to go trick-o-treating this Halloween? ??That's how many 5-13 year olds there are in the United States. Of course, age is no limit for Halloween fun, so those numbers might be a bit of an understatement.
Did you know that there are 106 million households in the United States? ??That's a lot of trick-or-treating ground to cover in just one night.
Did you know that the states of Arizona, Nevada, Florida, North Carolina, Colorado and Georgia have all seen recent increases in their elementary-school aged population (in contrast to the rest of the country, which has witnessed a drop-off)? ??If you live in one of these six states, be sure to stock up on candy sales, as you're likely to see lots of trick-or-treaters this October 31st.
Did you know that if you have young children, Halloween is undoubtedly an important landmark in your fall holiday schedule? ?
