Happenings at Casa Dante

  • Marchese di Frescobaldi " Wines of Family Run Vineyards" on Thursday November 3rd.  Fine wines from a noted and prestigious producer. Of course, you know they include Ornellaia & Mormoretto which are some notable wines and names that will be presented by the vineyards representative Mr. Paul Castillo. Topped off by the food pairing of Chef Gregg. ( Gregg was recently featured in Jersey City Magazine ) A bit of live Jazz rounds out what is typically a wonderful evening. See the full wines and menu at www.casadante.com/events. Please do join us!
Please let us know your interest at info@casadante.com. Menu will be posted shortly. We keep wine dinners intimate, so consider this a heads-up to reserve a spot now.

  • How about this..Thanksgiving is next month!
Although Thanksgiving is tradionally celebrated at home, we know that in today's busy lifestyle, this is often unrealistic and expensive. Combined with the time needed for shopping, preparing, cooking, serving & cleanup, the holiday's could become more of a chore than a celebration.
Casa Dante offers an alternative; We are open forThanksgiving Day celebration on Thursday November 24th. Featuring either a Special Menu with most of our Classics or a Prix Fixe. We don't do "seating's"( ie: 1pm, 3pm, etc )  so you choose the time by making reservations ( first come, first served so act soon). Let us do the work, the service, and the cleanup; you enjoy time with you family in a great restaurant!
  •
  • Paul Sorvino Sings!, actor, singer, chef and friend of Casa Dante "sings" at the Loews Theater in Journal Square on October 27 and November 4th. We love Paul's style, personality and charm and look forward to seeing and hearing him. Anyone with tickets to the show gets a 10% discount off dinner check on those days. Make sure you tell your server and see you at the concert!

  • I've extended the 1/2 price wine Mondays with dinner through November.  This program has become a great tradition here and we've been introduced to many new wine lovers as a result. Our Wine list was honored with a Wine Spectator Award for 2011 so the wines match the offer: Great!

  •  New Years Eve with Julian & Dominique  at Casa Dante.
If you've been here during this holiday, you know its always alot of fun. The New Years Bash starts at 9pm. It includes Champagne toast, dinner, cocktail, party favors and entertainment, televised feed from Times Square and more..We will open our doors at 3 PM for regular diners in our front room.I'll be posting more information as we get closer right here and on our website. I hope you take advantage of this early notice for our regular attendees. We are taking reservation now for this big night!

Memories of Home cooked food!

an email response from a subscriber regarding foods that you remember your Mom ( or Dad) made.  Your "smell" memory is something that persists throughout your life.

A dinner I loved way back when----------stuffed breast of veal--------which we called 'bonzette'.  My mother stuffed this with bread stuffing and roasted it in the oven alongside potatoes pizziola,
As I remember, this was the whole breast of veal----don't even see that anymore--------but I wouod sure like to see this on your menu.                  jerseyrose

Great Recipe
Whole Wheat Veggie Lasagna
Easy Whole Wheat Vegetarian Lasagna. Make your vegetarian lasagna just a bit healthier by using this recipe, which calls for whole wheat lasagna noodles and spinach. Even though it uses whole wheat noodles, this Italian spinach lasagna is incredibly rich and creamy as it uses plenty of mozzarella, Parmesan, and low-fat cottage cheese. Recipe courtesy of the Wheat Foods Council.
  • 1 8 ounce package whole wheat lasagne noodles, cooked slightly (al dente)
  • 1 9 ounce package frozen raw spinach
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups low-fat cottage cheese
  • 3 cups pre-made or store-bought pasta sauce
  • 3 cups grated low-moisture part skim mozzarella cheese
Preparation:
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.
In medium mixing bowl, beat eggs; add cottage cheese and Parmesan cheese. Spray a 13 x 9-inch glass baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
Put one layer of slightly cooked lasagna noodles flat across the bottom of the baking dish. Add 1/2 the leaf spinach, pressing down lightly and evenly over noodles. Top with another layer of lasagna noodles. Top this layer of noodles with the cottage cheese mixture; add the remaining spinach. Then add the last of the lasagna noodles laid evenly on top of spinach. Spread pasta sauce evenly over the top; sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Press down lightly.
Cover baking dish with foil, using foil sprayed with cooking spray and keeping foil off the center of the lasagna. Secure sides tightly over baking dish.
Bake about 1 hour 15 minutes in oven. To lightly brown the top, remove foil for a few minutes at the end of baking time.
Allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Did you know?

Columbus Facts

1. He was born into poverty and became the greatest explorer of his time. No wait, Columbus was born into a wealthy, influential family and used his connections to work his way to the top. Like much about Columbus, his life story has been exaggerated in many accounts. Here’s what we know for sure: Columbus lived 1451-1506. He was born in Genoa, Italy as the oldest of five children and died in Valladolid, Spain. He had two sons from two different women.
2. Discovering the "New World" and giving Americans off the second October of each year wasn’t Columbus’ goal when he set sail from Spain. He was searching for a shorter route to China and guaranteed trade riches that would come from such a discovery. The explorer didn’t realize an entire continent lay between Europe and Asia, and that China wasn’t just a short westward journey away. Columbus believed he landed on Asian soil, and he died believing that. He even made crews on the second voyage swear they were in Asia—and threatened he would cut off the tongues of those who didn’t fall in line.
3. At least those sailors were just threatened. Columbus’ treatment of native populations was much worse. He and his underlings enslaved people of Hispaniola, forcing everyone older than 14 to mine for gold. Settlers cut off noses and ears of native people who rebelled. Settlers who rebelled against the harsh living conditions, lack of promised gold and perceived mismanagement of the colony were hanged—an action that led to Columbus’ eventual arrest and return to Spain in shackles.
4. Columbus Day became an official federal holiday in 1937, although some states informally celebrated it much earlier. The first known Columbus Day celebration was in New York for the 300th anniversary of the 1492 voyage, according to the History Channel. Originally, Columbus Day was always on Oct. 12, but was changed to become the second Monday in October.
5. Christopher Columbus is one of only two people to get a holiday named after him; the other is Martin Luther King Jr. George Washington comes close, but his holiday is known as Washington’s Birthday, but not George Washington Day. And he barely has that anymore. Although the federal government still calls it Washington’s Birthday, entities from used car lots to school districts normally ditch that in favor of Presidents Day to recognize both Washington and Abraham Lincoln.
* I guess he wasn't such a good guy after all.
