My Two Cents
Where did all the Italians go?
Some
time ago I walked into a Manhattan pizzeria and quietly ordered a slice from a
gentleman who had a slight resemblance to Rocky Balboa. I could hear the
Sicilian dialect being spoken, although I couldn't quite understand their
particular brand? But boy did I feel at home. It brought back memories of my
youth in NY.
I
grew up in the business and my uncles had pizzerias in various parts of the
city; way back when. I'd hang around and talk to the "guys" who
worked the long shifts. They were generally newcomers from southern Italy and
were looking for a way to start a life in the big city. Hard work, long hours,
little pay and days without sleep was their existense. They would
send money back home from scrimping on meals, clothes, entertainment and so
many other things that we take for granted. Occassionaly I'd hear that one of
them returned to Italy, disillusioned and spent. Sometimes a happier story
emerged; but only sometimes.
I
asked Rocky " da quale parte di Sicilia vieni?". A baffled
look greeted my query about his Sicilian place of birth. He pointed
out that he was Greek; if fact all the workers there were from Greece. The
dialect I heard spoken was actually Greek, which is distinctly
similar in tone and cadence to some spoken Sicilian. Amazing! The pizza was
good too! I wonder if Rocky's sending money home to Mom?
